Is it not the same wherever you go as a tourist. If you avoid the tourist area and go native, you get better food, service, and prices. I live in France and going where the French go on Mass is a good idea.

I agree about Calais, I had an incredibly good beef in red wine at at cafe there when we were on our wine buying excursion (booze cruise avoiding the hypermarket).

I've always gone to dives in Paris because I knew that trying to go somewhere nice would be a waste of my money without sound recommendations from locals.

Seems that the easier a place is the find, the worse the food.

Also - I got your email (and forwarded it on to Giz). Glad to hear that you got the sauce and bracelet!

I agree with both of you Jeanne and Lucy. I think that Paris is the best place for food without a doubt.

Believe it or not, this reminded me of one similiar dish I had in Paris 5 years and 5 months ago. The trip was unforgettable for me and I look forward to visiting the most romantic city again.

I do agree that their fashion sense is like a breath of fresh air! And I like the phrase, "The former has proven that you don’t have to let your tits hang out to turn heads." haha

What a pity you had such a bad experience!! I would say though that a little pre-trip research goes a long way in Paris as there are indeed numerous tourist traps waiting to swallow you. We had an outstanding and resoundingly French meal at Aux Lyonnais (Alain Ducasse's cheap & cheerful bistro) as well as a wonderful meal at Maceo near the Opera (they also had a vegetarian menu that my friend adored). And the best sandwich I've ever had came from a small anonymous pattiserie near the Luxembourg Gardens. And don't even get me started on the fabulous Berthillon ice cream...

Love chicken chasseur - it's a classic!

The rules for Paris are the same as they are *anywhere* in the world: Go far from the tourist areas. Don't eat anywhere that has an english-printed menu. And you're never going to get decent street food in Paris--because Parisians don't eat standing up! Except for young people. But their favorite meal is steak frites, so they can't be trusted. If you're looking for something a little less expensive, try a neighborhood pub. 10 euro will get you a decent glass of wine and an omelette salade. The food in Paris is amazing...if you look in the right places.
