Chocolate Brandy Torte

Chocolate Brandy Torte

On Valentine’s Day I put on my baking mitts and got to work. While neither Neil nor I are obsessed with the commercialised “special” day we thought it wouldn’t hurt to treat ourselves to something sweet. What I loved most about this cake was its contrast. Outside it was cracked, hard and almost crunchy and then inside a sweet, moist sponge. A word of warning though, the cake dries out extremely fast and should preferably be eaten really quickly. What a perfect excuse because within 24 hours between the three of us the cake was no more…

Butternut Squash Risotto

Butternut Squash Risotto

Older readers know by now I love butternut. I have posted recipes where it is used in two soups, a vegan meal, roasted and even in pâté. It was only a matter of time that I was going to use in classic risotto. The original recipe I found in olive magazine but adapted it slightly to make it healthier. Enjoy.

Pan-Fried John Dory with Creamy Mushroom and White Wine Sauce

Pan Fried John Dory with Creamy Mushroom and White Wine Sauce

A quick recipe search for John Dory on a few food sites left me mostly empty-handed and disappointed. Thanks to Good Taste Foods, this was my first opportunity to taste this notorious fish and I really, really didn’t want to make a cock-up. It suddenly dawned on me you really can’t go wrong with serving a French type of creamy white wine sauce with any type of white fish. It was splendid.

Matthew Biggs’s Complete Book of Vegetables

Since I can remember I’ve always been a fan of plants; especially ones that give me food. When adults asked what I would like in return for doing odd jobs I asked for potted herbs you buy at your local nursery. I simply loved the idea that these living beings have medicinal properties that can help mankind in almost every conceivable way. Matthew Biggs’s Complete Book of Vegetables

My plant fascination grew when I moved to the UK. I learnt a lot from Neil who already planted his own vegetables year after year before I came along. My enthusiasm is palpable as soon as spring starts and out comes a huge range of seeds to plant in containers. It will never cease to amaze me how a tiny seed barely bigger than a salt grain can grow into a big, strong plant with plentiful crop. When the seedlings are big enough they get transplanted to the garden. Now here’s the catch. WEEDING. This is my weakness in the whole process. Thus far I haven’t succeeded in constantly pulling out unwanted invaders on the vegetable plot and at the end of the growing season it’s like a jungle out there.

Simple Butternut Squash Soup

Simple Butternut Squash Soup

When I was a typical kid, I was a finicky eater especially when it came to vegetables. As far as I can remember the only veggies I ate were peas, carrots, mushrooms, cauliflower and potatoes. Tiny onion pieces in meat dishes were painstakingly picked out and decorated the side of my plate meal after meal. My parents tried their best to ply me with all sorts but to no avail. Popeye could keep his spinach and the whole other lot too.

Cantonese Chicken, Shiitake Mushroom, Leek and Water Chestnut Stew

When I think of Chinese food I tend to think of the greasy food served up by my local take-away or a quick, healthy stir-fry prepared by yours truly at home. The concept of a slow-cooked Chinese meal has never even occurred to me until now. I was in for a surprise.

One thing you’ll quickly realise when you come to live in the UK is that its residents talk about the weather…a LOT. It’s not because they’re trying to be polite in all their Britishness but the weather here is utterly, truly and completely unpredictable (can I add horrible too?).
