Giveaway #8: Tomato Hamper by Cirio – Winner – CLOSED

To all three hundred people who entered Greedy Gourmet’s eighth giveaway – a big thank you. After perusing what everyone’s favourite tomato dish is I’ve compiled a list of over forty unique items. Of course, Spaghetti Bolognese, was by far the most popular answer, followed by tomato soup and pasta with tomato sauce. Oh, and I must not forget pizza! With plus minus forty flowering tomato plants in our vegetable garden, I know that pretty soon I’ll be sitting with a glut of tomatoes screaming to be eaten. No worries though, I’m armed with The List!

Isn’t it funny how early childhood experiences can affect you later in life? Or in this case, non-experiences? A few months ago I was approached by Cirio to do a review of their new products. The thought of eating tinned tomatoes filled me with trepidation. Why? Well, my mother never cooked with them! Ever a good role model, she always cooked with fresh vegetables, even tomatoes which were quite labour intensive; you have to submerge them in boiling water, skin, seed and chop them.

When I first read this recipe I got filled with scepticism. How can it possibly taste good? It contains no wine, let alone stock. The concoction will probably be bland and boring.
