Godminster Vintage Oak Smoked Organic Cheddar

Cheese aficionados rejoice! This is one cheese not to be missed.
Although my experience with smoked cheese is somewhat limited, I’m all too familiar with the supermarket’s small selection which mostly comprises pre-sliced Germanic cheeses whose texture is plastic-like and tastes mediocre. This really is a case of once you taste black you’ll never go back. Erm, or should I say, once you savour quality smoked cheese you’ll never eat the supermarket’s artificial junk again.
The cheese came in attractive yet proper packaging as there were no spills or leaks. Its Use By date was more or less a month in advance and it didn’t need refrigeration until opened.

The cheddar’s flavour was quite strong and the smoky flavour came through clearly. Thin slivers of cheese on toast drizzled with honey yielded favourable results but I found it a bit overpowering. I think it’s all a matter of taste and I’m sure there are people out there who will devour the whole block in one sitting without blinking.
Luckily, inspiration struck and I melted the crumbled cheese bit by bit in some béchamel sauce until the desired potency. The sauce was served with beef burgers and it truly was out of this world. Fried chicken strips dunked in the sauce also worked well. If you’re really feeling naughty or simply lazy, just heat some double cream, crumble the cheese in it, wait for it to melt and voila, instant smoked cheese sauce!
