Ginger Beer & Gin Cocktail

Ginger Beer & Gin Cocktail

At the risk of sounding like a complete skinflint I’d like to moan and groan about cocktail prices in restaurants, bars and night clubs. Am I the only one who thinks they are hideously overpriced?!

Strawberry & Orange Juice

Strawberry & Orange Juice

By now many countries are probably enjoying summer. Lucky you! Just when the UK summer started showing signs, strong winds blew hard and brought cloud after cloud to us, not to mention rain. At least strawberries started appearing in the shops and this drink will definitely refresh you on a muggy afternoon.

Don Pedro

Don Pedro

“Whizh-ki, please,” I replied to the waitress when asked how I would like my Don Pedro. This was back in the day when I thought the song, All I Want For Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth, was funny because it was so true. It definitely is one of my favourite desserts of all time.

Whisky has its uses in the culinary world, for example in mince pies, toffee, oak and spices. But have you thought about using it with ice cream?

Buck’s Fizz

Buck’s Fizz

Warning: This drink will cause severe giggling fits even if the joke told wasn’t so funny. In extreme cases there was no joke. Your cheeks will turn a vivid red as if you put on too much blush, or in the case of men stole Ronald McDonald’s stash of red makeup paint. Lastly, expect to receive a few bumps and knocks as you try to fool everyone into thinking you’re sober but while trying to walk in a straight line bang into the door frame. Am I speaking for myself now? I guess I’d better stop before I spill even more beans. *hiccup*

Blackberry & Yoghurt Smoothie

Blackberry & Yoghurt Smoothie

England to me is a berry country, because they are simply everywhere in the summer and autumn. Wherever you walk, whether it is deep in a copse or on a sidewalk, you have to watch your step because of the bramble branches. With all their thorns they do hurt when they unashamedly prick your hands when you rough handle them absent-mindedly. These blackberry plants grow ferociously in the summer and if you have one in your garden you probably know by now that you have to trim the damn thing year in and year out. There is an upside though. Around August and September brambles get into the “giving spirit” before Christmas and produce beautiful, dark, and plump berries ripe for the picking. Let me tell you how to pick just the best.

Apple & Cinnamon Infusion

Apple & Cinnamon Infusion

This drink is a refreshing alternative to the real sap if you don’t have a juice extractor. As you simmer the apples their flavour and sweetness flow into the hot water and what you’re left with is the pure essence of apple.

Since raw apple is too acidic for a baby I thought it would be interesting to let Gabriel try a bit of this infusion. At first he just shoved his weaning cup away, thinking it contained water. After having his lunch, he built up a thirst and again I presented the cup to him. With little enthusiasm for my offering he took a sip. In a few seconds his eyes were as huge as saucers and his hands clenched the handles, fear stepping in that I will take this great tasting water away from him. For the next few minutes all you could hear was slurps and gurgles.

Ruby Grapefruit Fizz

Ruby Grapefruit Fizz

When Neil and I got to know each other, I told him when celebrating I like to drink champagne mixed with orange juice. “Oh, you mean Buck’s Fizz,” he said. At that moment I gave him a blank look, which quickly turned into a worried expression, wondering if he’s from planet Cuckoo. A few years down the line I now know what it is and found out Neil is saner than me. Worrying, isn’t it?
