Enjoy the last month of winter with this satisfyingly nutritious soup.

Always thinking of the next meal...

Home owners are very familiar with this concept: something in the house is always broken.

There is no sign of winter leaving us any time soon, so we might as well get comfortable with a big cup of steaming soup.

There are some food bloggers and ethical eaters I know who will skin me alive for eating asparagus this time of year.

This soup is definitely different from the rest. A rich, silky, green taste rolls over your tongue and slips into your stomach, satisfying it instantly. The star ingredient is the avocado. This fantastic idea comes from Mexico where avocados come aplenty and are used from starters to desserts, even drinks! Also, usually soups containing avocado are served cold, but this one is hot because here at Greedy Gourmet we like to be different.

For the first time in more than two years there was peace and quiet in our home. The boys, Neil and our son, drove up to Grimsby for the weekend to visit Gabriel’s paternal grandparents. I opted to stay at home and finish a few projects that have been nagging at me for ages.

A while ago I realised it is much cheaper to buy a whole chicken than acquiring just my favourite cuts, like breasts or drumsticks. It took some practice to joint a chicken, and by no means am I going to win a chicken chopping contest any time soon, but when I’m done I’m beaming with pride. At first I threw away the carcasses and later realised there is actually more work to be done…

When I was a typical kid, I was a finicky eater especially when it came to vegetables. As far as I can remember the only veggies I ate were peas, carrots, mushrooms, cauliflower and potatoes. Tiny onion pieces in meat dishes were painstakingly picked out and decorated the side of my plate meal after meal. My parents tried their best to ply me with all sorts but to no avail. Popeye could keep his spinach and the whole other lot too.

Are you guys still on a diet? If you were on the virtuous road of healthy eating the last few days, watch out, because I’m about to kick you off the wagon to join the rest of us blissfully ignorant, hedonistic eaters.
My relationship with the phenomenon known as chowder has been a rocky ride. The first time I tried one was when I was 13 years old. It was at a Capetonian restaurant (which has thankfully closed in the meantime) where I ordered Sweet Corn Chowder. That night I was seriously ill. I’ll spare you the gory details but needless to say since then I’ve avoided the dish like the plague.
