Unlike Italian and French cooking, South African cuisine features on restaurant menus very seldom. When will the world catch up?

“Whizh-ki, please,” I replied to the waitress when asked how I would like my Don Pedro. This was back in the day when I thought the song, All I Want For Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth, was funny because it was so true. It definitely is one of my favourite desserts of all time.
Whisky has its uses in the culinary world, for example in mince pies, toffee, oak and spices. But have you thought about using it with ice cream?
Happy Shrove Tuesday, everybody! For those outside the UK, today is also known as Pancake Day. Funny that. In South Africa, whenever we have a grey, cloudy and rainy day, we call it a “pancake day”. Outside privately owned coffee shops notice boards will appear on the sidewalk, inviting you in for pancakes and tea. No wonder they don’t have this tradition over here, otherwise all the Britons will end up looking like this popular dessert! Cinnamon and sugar is the traditional South African way to serve pancakes with. Try it and you’ll understand why.

When I was about 4 years old my mother made finger foods for the church on every odd Sunday. These are one of the recipes she made. Like any typical kid I especially wanted to help her make these blobs of chocolate heaven. Constantly I was told to keep my fingers out of the sweet, thick mixture but how could I resist? At least I got to lick the pot out afterwards. During sermons all I could think about was my “sjokolade jungle oat koekies”, wishing the dominie (reverend) would come to a conclusion. Any conclusion, even if we all burn in hell I simply didn’t care for as long as I could eat my “koekies” first I will die happy.
