Lille is an escape into a wonderful decadence which seems as far away as 1950′s cinéma vérité yet is as close as an afternoon stroll. The sights and sounds of the Art Deco near Lille Cathedral, and the anticipation of wonderful lobster selected fresh followed by a vanilla-centred gaufre and I am in gourmet heaven. I can smell the fresh ground coffee as I contemplate a a gentle evening listening to the nostalgic music of Edith Piaf, Charles Aznavour and Jacques Brel sung live at La Petite Cave.

    Daniel Stapley says:

The day trip to Lille would make a huge difference to me on so many levels. Simply to be given the opportunity to have a day out, and ‘pop’ to Lille for a day out is amazing. I would absolutely relish every second. More so as a single parent who rarely has a spare penny this would be a real treat for a day.

My partner refuses to speak French after a Parisian incident in which he ordered a soft drink and got a plate of assorted meats. Now he is reluctant to go anywhere “exotic”, including Scotland. A little break to Lille would make a big difference to his preconceptions, and broaden our horizons considerably!

I can’t claim that a trip to Lille would be life-changing – I’ve been before, many years ago, and enjoyed it hugely. Nor could I claim that travelling on the Eurostar would be a novel experience – once upon a time, in the days when it still ran out of Waterloo, I hopped aboard quite often and loved the speed and sheer convenience of it all.

But I certainly would love to win the tickets so I can follow in the Lille food bloggers’ foosteps. I have my list, Benoit Chocolatier and Meert amongst them. And, of course, such a trip would give me an excuse to throw myself into one of my all-time favourite activities – trip planning!

Research a 100 hotels and a 1000 restaurants! A chore? Oh no, not to me, I absolutely love it! Trip research and planning is truly one of those things I can lose myself in… and then, the joys of the trip itself.

And of course, I have lots of bloggers to whom I can turn for advice and ideas!

Lille is like two cities in one with its mixture of French and Flemish heritage, it is an ideal destination for city breaks or even a day trip. Food lovers will not be disappointed in Lille as there is a wide range of restaurants, brasseries and cafes serving everything from gastronomic cuisine to moules and frites. The difference for me will be to get more trom the place it self, than from the information I got from the net.
