Good Karma #3

Good Karma #3

From next week I promise not to blow my own trumpet so much – but then again someone’s got to do it! In April 2006 I picked up my first DLSR and haven’t put it down since. Last year I decided to join Southend-on-Sea’s Photographic Society (read photo club) to see how my photos measured up. After Gabriel was born I got a bit obsessed with baby and toddler photography and got the mothers’ permission to practise on their kids at the playgroup. Here are the best photos and results…

Best Print in the Portrait & Figure section. Got trophy.

Good Karma #3

2nd Place in the Portrait & Figure section.

Good Karma #3

3rd Place in the Portrait & Figure section.

Good Karma #3

Highly Recommended in the Portrait & Figure section. The first judge wondered what I did to Gabriel in order to get such an expression out of him; something along the lines of sticking a hot poker up his bum. Actually, at four months he was just really pleased to see me.

Good Karma #3

Highly Recommended in the Portrait & Figure section.

Good Karma #3

Highly Recommended in the Landscape/Seascape section. Although landscapes/seascapes are not my speciality, I took a snap anyway from our balcony in Cape Town in January 2008.

Good Karma #3

Best Preliminary Slide and 1st place in the Portrait & Figure slide section. Got a trophy.

Good Karma #3

2nd Place in the Portrait & Figure slide section.

Good Karma #3

Highly Recommended in the Any Other Subject slide section. The competition just wouldn’t have been complete without a food photo!

Good Karma #3

I only participated in one of the three slide competitions – so in theory if I wasn’t so lazy I probably could have won all the trophies. Good Karma #3 Don’t any of you dare to come close to me with a needle in hand to pop my ego!

In all serious I’m hoping to make a living off photography in a few years specialising in food and lifestyle (children, babies, families, weddings, etc.) photography. Within the next few weeks I’ll set up my portfolio site so stay tuned. Oh, and if you’re in the vicinity of Southend’s library, don’t forget to check out the prints of the photos above in the exhibition from 4-20 June 2009!
