Amazona Zoo is located on the outskirts of Cromer in north Norfolk.
As someone who was born and bred in Africa I experienced this little zoo a breath of fresh air, with not a lion, hippo or elephant in sight. In fact, I barely knew a handful of these South America animals and found the visit quite educational.
It's strange to think that South America and Africa once formed part of a large continent, called Gondwana. You would have thought the animals would bear some resemblance to each other but after 200 million years the land masses separated their animals evolved into different looking creatures altogether.
Judging by their patterned coats the Jaguar and Cheetah are somewhat similar with the former being heavier, shorter and not nearly as fast as the latter. Amazona Zoo created similar surroundings for this feline as its natural habitat, the rainforest. Its enclosure is quite dark thanks to plenty of foliage and it takes a little while to spot the animal. The Rheas look like mini ostriches, and Caiman like small, sly crododiles.
Other animals simply can't be compared to others. The Tapirs and Capybaras, both herbivores, live peacefully together and the otters were missing or just hiding very well. The Mara looks like a donkey and rabbit had a fun night together and the Spider Monkeys were rather cute cuddling together in little huddles.
These are just a few animals we saw, be sure to visit to see more. After ogling all the animals there is a small play park where kids can unwind and everyone can enjoy picnics.
Onsite you'll find a cafe and a big indoor play area. Amazona Zoo makes the perfect birthday party venue. Don't forget to check out the times each particular animal is fed to view more awesomeness. Prices start at £8.50 for children and for a family of two adults and two adults cost £35. Not bad for a fun day out!
