Variations to this Recipe
- Homemade or Ready Made: You can use store-bought eggnog for the eggnog glaze on these cookies, or go for the homemade option and use my classic eggnog recipe.
- Go Kid Friendly: You can make kid-friendly eggnog cookies using alcohol-free eggnog.
- Eggnog Flavor: If you want a more robust eggnog flavor, you can increase the amount of eggnog in the recipe. Add an additional 1-2 tablespoons of eggnog to the dough to enhance the eggnog taste.
- Spices: Feel free to adjust the amount of ground nutmeg and cinnamon according to your taste preferences. You can add a bit more if you enjoy a stronger spice flavor or reduce the amount if you prefer a milder taste. You could even add ¼ teaspoon of ground cloves to make it even more of a holiday cookie!
- Icing Variations: While the recipe provides a basic eggnog icing, you can experiment with different flavors. Add a rum or rum extract to the icing for a boozy twist. Alternatively, you can replace the eggnog with milk or heavy cream with a different flavor profile.
- Texture and Thickness: Reduce the baking time by a minute or two for a softer and chewier texture. You can extend the baking time slightly if you prefer a crisper cookie. Monitor the cookies as they bake to ensure they reach your desired texture.
- Additions: If you want to add some texture and flavor, consider mixing in chopped nuts (such as pecans or walnuts), dried fruits (such as raisins or cranberries), or chocolate chips into the cookie dough.
- Plain: Feel free to omit the icing from the top and, instead, add a sprinkling of simple icing sugar or even have them plain. They'll still be delicious!
Top Tips
- Use butter at room temperature when mixing with the sugar. This makes sure your mixture is nice and fluffy.
- Make sure you get the correct measurements. The quality of your cookies depends a lot on the precision of the ratios between wet and dry ingredients.
What is eggnog?
A traditional holiday season drink, eggnog is a rich and creamy drink made with raw egg, milk, rum, brandy, sugar, and spices. All the ingredients are blended to make a smooth and velvety creamy drink perfect for the festive season.
Where does eggnog come from?
The origins of this delicious Christmas drink have yet to be discovered. There are claims that it was first created in Medieval Britain when the posher classes blended milk, eggs, and sherry around Christmas time.
As spice trading gained traction and other cuisines began to influence the Brits, spices were added, and, over the years, it became one of the classic Christmas recipes.
Do you use the whole egg or just egg yolks when making eggnog cookies?
For the actual cookies, the whole egg is used. However, only egg yolks are used when it comes to the eggnog glaze.
Is this recipe kid friendly?
If you want to make a kid-friendly version, go for alcohol-free eggnog when making the eggnog frosting.
How do you store eggnog cookies?
Store these cookies at room temperature in an airtight container. They will stay fresh for up to four days.
Can you freeze eggnog cookies?
Yes. Allow the cookies to cool completely, then place them in an airtight freezer-safe container. You can freeze them for up to six months.
Thaw at room temperature and allow them to reach room temperature before serving.
Can you freeze eggnog cookie dough to make later on?
Yes... this cookie dough can be portioned into cookie balls, and frozen for a later date.
To freeze cookie dough, divide them into separate portions and flash freeze on a baking tray for an hour. Then, place each individual into a freezable airtight container. This method prevents them from sticking together.

For the Icing:
- 120 grams (1 cup) powdered sugar
- 30-45 milliliters (2-3 tablespoons) eggnog
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 175°C (350°F). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set it aside.
- In a large mixing bowl, cream the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
- Add the eggnog, eggs, and vanilla paste to the butter mixture. Beat until well combined.
