There's nothing more satisfying than making a delicious leftover lamb sandwich. Who said that roasted lamb is just a one-hit wonder, right?
You can pretty much reuse the leftovers from a roasted lamb dinner for a couple or more days in the week. In essence, some of the leftover roasted lamb might get a bit dry if you don't use the leftovers immediately.
So shoving those pieces of meat into a sandwich with a rich sauce is the perfect solution. With this leftover lamb sandwich recipe, you'll feel like you're having a cosy Sunday meal any day of the week you want.
Experiment with different sauces or fillings and put your own twist on this sandwich. Just make sure that you guard it well if you happen to take it to work. It's a total standout sandwich and other colleagues will be eyeing it. Yes, it's that good!
why you should try lamb
First and foremost, lamb comes from sustainable EU farms across various regions of Europe. There's nothing better than sourcing a high quality and premium cut of lamb. These cuts include:
- ground lamb or lamb mince: try it in this minted lamb burgers recipe
- rack of lamb - make this finger-licking BBQ rack of lamb
- shoulder of lamb - put an Indian spin on it and make lamb bhuna
- lamb chop - try your hand at this spicy lamb madras
- lamb neck fillets - have a go at this lamb tikka
- leg of lamb - be bold with this Indian roast leg of lamb
- lamb shanks - braise them in red wine like this
Guess what – these are accessible directly at your supermarket. Plus, contrary to what you might have been led to imagine, lamb meat is quite inexpensive! So give them all a go and try your hand at this easy lamb sandwich recipe as a start!
Furthermore, lamb is often thought of as a fatty and heavy meat. However, lamb is in fact very nutritious and healthy for you! It is rich in essential nutrients like protein, niacin and vitamin B12!
These support energy production and the nervous system, so after eating lamb regularly you should start feeling more energised. In addition, it is low on sodium. Now do you believe me that lamb supports a healthy diet? Give it a go!
leftover lamb sandwich – best fillings
The sauce that makes up the lamb sandwich is also an integral part of making this sandwich a success. Remember, if you use leftover pieces of roasted lamb that are a couple of days old, the sandwich will benefit from the addition of moisture.
That being said, bread is also a very dry element so I highly recommend you include a sauce that helps bind all the ingredients together. It can be savoury or sweet, the choice is completely yours. Here are some ideas that may inspire you!
jams & chutneys
A typical sauce that works wonders with lamb is in fact any type of berry jam. More specifically, you should experiment with the traditional Sunday roast cranberry jam or lingonberry jam.
These berry flavours are exceptional with the umami flavours of the meat. For this reason, in some countries you will always find these jams as a side dish to meat classics like the Viennese schnitzel.
Would you like to save this?
If you fancy a similarly marvellous addition to one of these jams inside your lamb sandwich, then opt for caramelised onion chutney. It's more savoury than sweet and, again, is an excellent option with lamb.
Come to think of it, making this leftover roast lamb sandwich reminds me of this amazing Yorkshire pudding wrap I've had the opportunity to eat in York. Read about my trip as well as the Yorkshire pudding wrap here.
I still remember biting into the Yorkshire pudding wrap that had leftover pieces of pork oozing with apple chutney. It was without doubt the best combination –putting the chutney inside the wrap.
Ultimately, it made the meat more juicy and complemented the roast flavours very well. Hence, I recommend you also try including a hint of apple chutney with your leftover lamb sandwich. If you're not a fan of apple, why not try blueberry chutney instead?
lamb sandwich with mint sauce
Here's a question for you. When you think of lamb – what's the first sauce that comes to mind? Mint sauce! If you've made a beautiful leg of lamb for your Sunday roast, you can reuse the mint sauce in your sandwich, too.
other savoury sauces
If you haven't got jam or any type of chutney at home, you can also use a simple French honey mustard glaze. Learn how to make you own honey mustard dressing here. It's very simple and doesn't make the lamb sandwich too heavy.
best bread for lamb sandwich
I really enjoy using a traditional French baguette for leftover meat from Sunday roasts. Especially when the baguette comes directly from the bakery and is really fresh! However, you can use all types of bread. These include:
- toasted bread - the typical, white toast bread that you also use for egg and cress sandwiches
- sourdough bread - yum!
- rye bread - although I recommend using more sauce in this case
- rolls - although these might be small, you can make more small-sized portions to snack on through the day
- pitta - lamb and pitta go hand-in-hand. Don't shy away from this Middle Eastern bread
Whichever bread you choose, you won't regret making this lamb sandwich!
This pumpkin and sweet potato soup complements this lamb sandwich beautifully.
