Why is it called In-N-Out?
The very first In-N-Out Burger opened in 1948. The creation of Harry and Esther Snyder, it was based on the car-hop system that was popular in California at the time.
Customers would pull up in the car park, an employee would come to their window and take their order and serve their food. In-N-Out!
It went on to become one of the most popular burger fast food joints in the country. It’s still family owned and family operated! Now, there are now over 300 In-N-Out restaurants in the US, most of them on the West Coast.
What is the In N Out sauce made of?
In N Out is all about keeping it simple. That’s why you can count the number of ingredients in the sauce on one hand. Yep… just 5 ingredients! Mayonnaise, ketchup, sweet pickle relish, sugar and white vinegar. That’s it!
What’s the difference between In-N-Out sauce and Thousand Island dressing?
Thousand Island dressing normally has a bit of a kick to it. It can contain anything from tabasco and paprika to Worcestershire sauce and lemon juice.
In-N-Out sauce is sweeter and not at all spicy.
Is In-N-Out sauce vegan?
In-N-Out sauce contains mayonnaise, which is made using eggs. So no, In-N-Out sauce is not vegan.
However, you can make a vegan In-N-Out sauce with a simple substitution. You could swap in hummus, mashed avocado (this will affect the color) cashew ricotta, macadamia nut butter or a plant-based mayo alternative.
How long does copycat In-N-Out sauce last in the fridge?
Put your copycat In-N-Out sauce in an airtight container and keep it in the fridge. It’ll last for around two weeks.
Can you freeze copycat In-N-Out sauce?
Want to keep your copycat In-N-Out sauce for longer than two weeks? No problem… you can easily freeze it.
Freeze your In-N-Out sauce in a small freezer-safe airtight container. Leave a little room at the top – sauces expand when frozen. Half and inch should do.
Label your container “Copycat In-N-Out sauce” and the date of freezing. It will last up to 3 months in the freezer.

Learn how to make In-N-Out Sauce. This classic sauce is quick and easy to prepare and goes well with burgers and fries.
Ingredients
- 125ml (½ cup) mayonnaise
- 45ml (3 tbsp) ketchup
- 30ml (2 tbsp) sweet pickle relish
- 6g (1 ½ tsp) sugar
- 7.5ml (1 ½ tsp) white vinegar
Instructions
- Place all the ingredients in a medium-sized bowl and stir until all the ingredients are well incorporated.
- For best results, cover and chill in the fridge for at least an hour before serving.
