For those of you looking to get into a healthier daily routine, protein shakes are a great way to go. There are lots of them on the market though, so it can often be hard to know which ones deliver real results and great value.
Today, I'm reviewing quite possibly the most popular up-and-coming vegan protein shake on the market – Jrny. Let's take a look at what makes this particular vegan protein powder so popular, so you can get a better idea of whether it suits your diet and lifestyle.

What is Jrny?
Jrny describes itself as a wellness company that's tailored for the modern woman. Each of the various vegan
shake flavours have been specially developed to meet the nutritional needs of women, without catering to a specific body type or diet. For me, it's a welcome break from talk of fast diets and weight loss programs.
Jrny are keen to point out that their blend of protein powders go way beyond the standard protein shakes. They use flavourings and sweeteners from natural sources, with no additives or any of that unpleasant stuff you often find in protein shakes.
What nutrients are in Jrny shakes?
Vitamins include vitamin D (for a healthy immune system), B vitamin complex for healthy skin, nails and improved brain function, and vitamin C for iron-absorption, healthy skin and an improved immune system.
Who founded Jrny?
Jrny was founded by Jamal Ayton-Brown and Jamal Ramsay. Using backgrounds in sports science and health consultation for BUPA, they were able to create a vegan protein powder that appealed to women, as well catering for typical nutritional deficiencies.
Jrny vegan protein shake review
For this review, I was sent the Double Chocolate Brownie variety with Madagascan Vanilla sachets on the side. It's a vegan protein shake – made from a plant-based blend, specifically a pure pea protein.
Packaging
The first thing I noticed was that the packaging is eco-friendly, which is a great relief. I'm tired of supposedly eco-friendly vegan protein powders that come in plastic packaging! Nothing of the sort with Jrny, whose packaging is made from biodegradable paper sachets inside a cardboard box.
There's also a handy wooden spoon to measure correct quantities. So, that's some early brownie points for practicality and sustainability.
Taste and texture
I’ve bought pure pea protein before to use in smoothies. Honestly, it can be quite hard to shake off the 'pea' taste. That said, Jrny Health has pulled it off in style!
Still, after drinking the Jrny Health Double Chocolate Brownie, I was left with a fine, powdery film that formed on the inside of my mouth. Some may find this off-putting, but I consider it as part of the territory when it comes to having protein-based smoothies. For me, it's really not a big deal, especially when you consider the taste and the all-round health benefits.
Ingredients
Some of the ingredients in the Double Chocolate Brownie flavoured shake include Pea Protein Isolate, Golden Flaxseed, Xylitol, Guar Gum, Raw Cacao, Hemp Protein, Potassium Gluconate, Calcium Carbonate, Magnesium Bisglycinate, B Vitamin Complex: Thiamin, Riboflavin, Sunflower Lecithin, Niacin, Pantothenic Acid, Pyroxine, Biotin, Ascorbic acid and Folic Acid.
Jrny vs Huel comparison
I've been a big Huel Black drinker for a while now. I'm such a busy bee that, most days, I just don’t have time to prepare a proper lunch. As Huel has been such a regular fixture in my day-to-day life, I was curious to see how Jrny compared.
Consistency
At some points, it feels as if you almost have to chew Huel protein shakes... I kid you not! Honestly, it's not always pleasant. It comes down to the high fibre content.
Jrny, on the other hand, is silky smooth. For a protein shake that's high in fibre, it's really impressive that they've managed to pull off this kind of smooth consistency.
Preparation
Preparation-wise, for Huel, you need to use 500ml (2 cups) of water for a 400 calorie portion, which serves as a meal replacement. It’s not quite the same with Jrny, where only 150-200ml water is needed along with 2 wooden scoops (30g).
I found myself using less and less water every time, looking for a thicker consistency in the drink or simply adding more powder to thicken it up. Otherwise, it was slightly too watery for me.
Fill factor
In terms of feeling full up, Huel is definitely the more filling of the two. I must admit, this was pretty obvious to me, because you use more liquid and fibre.
However, if you’d like to shave off some calories from your busy daily routine, Jrny can help with that. Huel is 400 calories, whereas a portion of Jrny is only 141, while in terms of protein, Huel is 40g per serving and Jrny is 21g per serving. Admittedly, I pop it in my protein shaker and take it before going to gym and have become quite hungry before dinner time when I had Jrny.
The secret to the problem? Stay busy! Alternatively, you can use the powder in a smoothie or dish of your choice.
Is Jrny a vegan protein shake?
Yes, Jrny is 100% vegan, soy free and gluten free.
Is Jrny sugar free?
It certainly is. Jrny is sweetened using natural sweeteners, such as steviol glycosides and xylitol.
What are the nutritional benefits of Jrny?
There are 16 different vitamins and minerals in Jrny protein powder, each of which has been specifically included to support women's health. The makers of Jrny protein shakes carried out in-depth research to find out the most common nutritional deficiencies in women's health, and designed a protein powder to specifically address these.
Low iron and magnesium levels, in particular, can affect energy levels and mental health – as Jrny contains these essential vitamins, it provides a quick short term boost in energy.
That's in the short term. In the long term, Jrny brings a whole lot of benefits, with protein that helps bone health, muscle growth and all round wellbeing, vitamins and minerals that promote heart health, and natural ingredients that support a robust, healthy immune system.
Can Jrny help you lose weight?
The makers of Jrny Health protein shakes are keen to point out that their shakes aren't designed to be a weight loss product and should definitely not be used as a meal replacement.
That said, having a Jrny Health vegan protein shake as part of an all-round fat loss diet is definitely something you can do. It's a great way to up your protein intake, get more essential nutrients into your diet and generally feel fantastic – as a supplement, rather than a meal replacement.
As Jrny Health points out – as long as you're expending more calories than you eat, through regular exercise and careful eating, you'll be able to lose fat and, therefore, lose weight.
How much does Jrny cost?
The Jrny one month starter kit costs £62.97, plus standard shipping costs (normally around £2.99). This includes a 900g pouch (30 servings), 6 x 30g sachets, a wooden serving spoon and a cool Jrny Health eco tote bag.
You can also buy just the 900g pouch, which costs £41.99 with a total of 30 servings.
