A popular accompaniment to cheese and meats, this Asian pear chutney is a popular Indian spread that adds tang and sweetness to whatever recipes you pair it with.
This recipe was inspired by my papaya chutney recipe. Swirl into a bit of yogurt to make a sweet sauce for meats or add to ketchup for an exciting dipping sauce for chips. Try it with this gluten free puri for a light snack or as an accompaniment to this Indian roast leg of lamb.

WHAT IS PEAR CHUTNEY
Pear chutney has a sweet and tangy taste with undertones of brown sugar, raisins, and dates.
Chutney is a spicy condiment made of fruits and vegetables with vinegar, spices, and sugar originating in India. Although sweet fruit is used in chutney, it is made savory with the addition of these spices and vinegar.
Common spices used in chutney are curry powder, garam masala, cinnamon, and ginger. Tomato, mango, and apples are common fruits used in chutney with the addition of dried fruits such as raisins, dates, and apricots.

WHAT CAN YOU SUBSITUTE FOR PEAR?
Pears go well with other fruits as they are a little tangy yet fairly mild in flavor. If you’d like to use a second fruit in this recipe, swap out half of the pears for any of the following fruits.
- Mango - this tropical fruit has a sweetness with a pine undertone that works well with pear
- Papaya - similar to mango, papaya has a buttery flavor that compliments pears
- Peach - this mellow, creamy, sugary fruit works with pear’s slight tanginess
- Apple - similar in taste to the asian pear, apples are sweet and a little tart depending on the varietal that you use.
WHAT OTHER FLAVORS WORK WELL IN THIS CHUTNEY
Use these spices to enhance the taste and for a little extra warmth and flavor.
- ¼ teaspoon allspice
- ¼ teaspoon clove
- ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
- ½ teaspoon curry powder
- ½ teaspoon cinnamon
